Chaos Jewellery
What I love about creating my handmade jewellery is that I do not have to follow the design rules, and it is with this in mind that I created these Chaos jewellery pieces.
I have been playing around with ring designs for the last few months.
I have been researching different styles of rings, and the ubiquitous stacking rings seem to be the trend at the moment, minimalist and function, but it lacks design wriggle room.
I have been playing around with different bezel set cabochon rings, looking at the band thickness in relation to the placement and size of the gemstone.
Then I hit on the idea of a fun wrap ring which was just messy and random.
I measured the 3rd finger on my right hand, and transfer the size to my ring mandrel.
I found some 15cm 1.2mm round recycled copper wire and just started wrapping the wire around the ring mandrel one size smaller.
Where the two ends crossed I cut and sanded each end flat, before soldering the two ends together to create the ring.
I loved the process so much and the final results so far, that whilst the two bigger rings ar cooling, I decided to create a smaller chaos ring to sit on my pinky finger:
Pickle to removed the oxides, before putting the ring back on the ring mandrel to create to add some texture to the rings.
This is a process of hitting the rings with different hammers to create the required texture, which hardens and makes the copper wire springy, and then annealing the copper to soften it so that I can apply more texture and shape the ring the way I want it.
As they say practice makes perfect so I have had a lot of fun creating and experimenting with the different design possibilities of these chaos rings.
Each ring will be unique in its own way which is another reason why I love making these rings:
And then I hit on the bright idea, I love the organicness of the rings so much, what would earrings look like?
With the same 1.2mm copper wire I start creating smaller random wraps, but only manage 4 wraps around the mandrel as these are smaller than the rings.
To be able to work with wire I have to anneal it so that I can bring the ends together to solder and form the ring:
The process is the same as when I created the chaos rings, just the small matter of adding a jump ring :
To finish off these beauties I have to add some sterling silver earwires, currently I have not decided the design on these.
There are so many design options with these chaos rings and earrings, including texturing, heat colouring, and with the sterling silver version adding embellishments such as sterling silver balls and gemstones.
All these pieces are available to buy from my Chaos Collection.
I would really love to hear your thoughts, so post something in the comments below:
Until next time
