Contemporary Sterling Silver Hoops....
Contemporary Sterling Silver Hoops....
After the months of trying to work out how to create a simple hoop design in copper, it was time to upgrade to sterling silver
Once you nail the basics then the world is your oyster when it comes to design.
It took me 3 months to get the underlying design of hoop rings right, using a number of different soldering techniques to create the classic hoop shape.
Luckily I was using copper, so it wasn't too expensive w.r.t. lessons being learned, but once mastered my creativity took over.
Classics are great, but that's part of the problem, they are classics so most handmade jewellers will have the same design, which kind of defeats the purpose of creating handmade jewellery!
Creating hoops in copper adds a contemporary edge, and customers at my last face-2-face event loved them so much that they all got snapped up pretty quickly, but there are some who cannot wear copper, so it's time to add some sterling silver hoops to the collection.
With that in mind I started making small sterling silver classic hoops, before moving swiftly on to creating these gorgeous contemporary square sterling silver hoops:
Confidence bouyed I went back to some of my earlier diasters, to see if they could be resusitated:
I am not 100% sure about the wire hoops, as I prefer the chunkier more substantial hoop design.
It's at this point that the creativity, playing and experimental begins, which leads me down the asymmetric route, which you know I love.
I got my hands on some burrs and thought this would be a good way to practice using them to create a texture, which makes the sterling silver sparkle when the light hits it:
I love how these hoops came out, I think they are both classic and contemporary, sterling silver is such a neutral colour, but this opens up so many finish options to bring jewellery to life, so what do you think?
These new sterling silver hoop designs will be added to the website next week.
I would really love to hear your thoughts, so post something in the comments below.
Until next time
