Historically Samhain marked the Celtic New Year and the end of the harvest season, and the Witches New Year (31st october - 1st November) bringing in the darker half of the year and the start of Winter.

It is said that the veil is thinnest during this period (the barriers between the physical and spirit world break down) allowing close interaction with ancestors and spirits.
