Soooooo, I finally did it Part II
Soooooo, I finally did it Part II
My first attempt in creating my new collection of sterling silver healing crystal spinner rings only had a 33% success rate, falling at the last hurdle.
For tose of you who have been following my metal smithing journey, you will have remember that my first foray into making spinner rings, resulted in a 33% success rate, for tgose who want a bit of a giggle check out my blog post So I finally did it!!!, now momma didn't raise a quitter, so it was back to the studio and drawing board to learn from my mistakes in trying to flare the ring to create the spinner.
I started by seperating the inner and out rings of the first batch failures, as I wanted to use the outer ring which had been set with the stones, and then remade the inner rings again to fit.
As the spinner flare gizmo is a bit unpredictable, I thought lets keep it simple this time, and used a dapping punch with a bit of brute force, i.e. a sledge hammer to achieve the same effect.
This method is a little bit more predictable, as long as you hit the sweet spot consistently, so there is an element of things still going awry!
Currently I am paying around with 2 healing crystal cabochon sizes with the spinner rings, as I cannot decide which I prefer, but some will be designed with the smaller stone, as that's what I can currently source.
With this latest batch I started off with the Opal, a healing stone that enhances cosmic consciousness and induces psychic and mystical visions, stimulating originality and creativity.
So naturally when creating the ring shanks they where going to get the star treatment:
Handcrafted SS star stamped Ethiopian Opal Spinner Rings
Which one do you prefer the Black or White Ethiopian Opal?
As I was in the stamping mood and playing around with different stamps in my collection, I decided to get a little bit creative, but also typing the design into the stone, starting off with this gorgeous Lapis Lazuli spinner ring:
I don't have that much i way of Aquamarine rings on the stand, but I sell plenty of earrings with this stone, so thought I would add it into the mix, whilst playing around with a couple of stamps I have lying around the workshop:
I think this ring has a Grecian feel to it, what do you think?
The problem with blue being your favourite colour you tend to favour and work with those stones more, unconsciously, so it was at this point that I realised I have created 2 blue stone spinner rings for the stall, so I had better even out the colours.
I wanted to create a larger Garnet stone spinner but found that I had run out of this size, but had a smaller facetted stone, that I could use, whilst waiting for the delivery, and wanted the stamped design to reflex the luscious dark red of the stone:
Looking atmy dandelion stamp, I thought Citrine would be the perfect choice:
As with most things with me and my making sessions not everything went to plan and/or my way:
- One spinner ring, I forgot to put the spinner part in the tumbler,
- Another I'm awaiting a delivery of some juicy 8mm garnet stones, and a
- Third I was a little bit overzealous with the sledgehammer trying to create the flare that I split the outside ring!
So my success rate has increased to 70%, I guess that's progress I suppose, I've found another little gizmo which might help with the consistent ring flaring problem, which is a hybrid between what I'm currently doing, and then it should be all systems go.
What do you think?
