Originally a Pagan and Celtic Sabbat, Samhain, which means Summer's End,  is one of the 8 festivals of the wheel of the year, celebrated from the 31st October until the 2nd November, and includes Halloween.

The Celts believed that this marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year.  They celebrated this period as the end of their year and the beginning on the new one.

For the Pagans its a celebration of remembering and honouring the ancestors, who could be known family members who have died, or unknown ancestors from the past, which may be of blood, of place or of tradition.

Samhain is traditionally associated with divination, with Pagans using various tools including tarot cards, oracle cards and runes to gain wisdom and insight into the coming year.

It is thought that this is the time of the year when the veil between our world and the after life is at its thinnest, meaning that the connections with loved ones is important, with the caveat that one protects oneself from dark or evil spirits.
