Triangular Rings
Triangular Rings
Last year, you may remember, I started working on a new triangular ring design, with the first design not being a success due to the sharp angles
To be honest I wasn't planning on making anything new this month, even though I had 2 face-to-face markets booked in, but I felt that i had more than enough stock to see me through.
Upcoming market are usually a catalyst to get me running to Joolzery HQ and start making, but surprisingly not this month.
I found a new emotion that has a better ablility to ignite that creative spark in me, Anger, yep this took me completely by surprise.
So you may be asking what angered me???
There have been a number of things that saw me going from 0-60 on the emotional scale but the main protagonist was a couple of local jewellers trying to copy a couple of my designs, one of which was the square rings. Now granted, nothing is new under the sun, but what I don't understand is, if you have a creative business, why can't you be creative???
Being influenced by another artist or crafter is one thing but to actually copy them is a whole different ball game, that said it was enough of a poke to say game on, and start playing around and working on some ring designs.
Remember that triangle ring design that I started working on last year?
As a recap, I made one but I found the angles too acute, and then I got distracted with work, volunteering and life on the whole.
But I thought this would be the perfect opportunity and impetus to have another look at it again and come out with something new within the handcrafted market circles I move in.
A few calculations and the copper ring bands are sawed and annealed:
Taking my frustration out initially by taking some annealed copper, I let my inner child and intuition create organic patterns using a variety of punches and a sledgehammer.
There is nothing better than wacking something with a hammer, and channeling my anger seems to have improved my stamping technique!!!
I begin to think that these rings could form the foundation of a male range of rings, so I wanted to create a brutalist pattern of random strikes on the metal.
In my fit of pique I decided to revisit the first triangular ring design, looking again at the angle issue, and remade my first ring, although it fitted perfectly I didn't like the sharp angles of the ring, as you don't want to be wearing jewellery that can take someones eye out!
So like my square rings I decided to round the edges:
I am really loving how these triangular rings look and feel on the fingers, but due to the spatial constraints of hands I think they make awesome pinky and thumb rings:
What do you think?
I would love to hear your comments below
